Good, productive writing is based on good note-taking- here’s how:

The Zettelkasten method is a personal knowledge management system that helps you capture, connect, and develop ideas through linked, atomic notes to enhance thinking, writing, and learning.
This method was created by German sociologist Niklas Luhmann, who used it to write over 70 books. His system relied on small cards, unique IDs, and links between ideas.

Three Types of Notes

  1. Fleeting Notes
      • What they are: Quick, temporary jottings—raw material.
      • Examples: Quotes, ideas, thoughts, tweets, book highlights.
      • Use: Capture everything that might be useful later.
  1. Literature Notes
      • What they are: Your own summary and interpretation of things you read or watch.
      • Examples: Notes from books, articles, videos.
      • Use: Translate consumed content into your own words.
  1. Permanent Notes
      • What they are: Clear, concise notes each containing one idea, written to be understood on their own.
      • Use: Designed to build long-term knowledge. Easy to link, reuse, and combine into larger works.
